New toy – Motorola TLKR T6.

After a few postphonements we finally got ourselves a pair of the Motorola TLKR T6. We got it because we would like to use it while on a hike just in case we do a little tour away from one another in the forest, or when we go shopping in a big supermarket we can split up and do the shopping a bit more effectively.

Specs:

Key Features

PMR446 radios – license free
Up to 8km range
(subject to terrain and conditions)
Free Calls
Rechargeable NiMH batteries
(supplied)
8 channels + 121 codes
Hands-free
Room monitor
Accessory connector

Now a bit about the walkie talkies. In the box you will get two handsets with back clips, two rechargeable battery packs and a charging cradle or dock. Other than the rechargeable batteries that they give we can actually change them with 4 AAA batteries on each handset. Giving you more choice when it comes to power. There are 8 channels and 121 codes to choose from with dual channel ability. (It’s like having a phone with two sim cards. :) ) Though it is said to have an 8KM range but it totally depends on whether there are any ‘interference’ in between – buildings, hills or mountains, etc. Though I think if you are going on a hike where the forest is not too thick you can easily get 3-4 km range from them. It has a headset port which you can get the accessory for it. It has VOX which enables you to use Voice activation – you don’t have to push to talk, it will transmit once you start speaking. Though activate it with your voice, just like when you use push to talk you need to wait a few seconds for it to transmit your voice to the other radio or walkie talkie. This feature is quite similar to the ‘room monitor’ option. The radio that you set to room monitor will automatically transmit when it picks up sounds or noise in the room where you left the radio in. So in a way it is good as a baby monitor that it would automatically transmit if the baby starts crying.

We had a little fun with it in the forest with them. Splitting up on different trails and getting one of the two to search. I am not the adventurous type – was always worried that I might end up with a roll-a-bout if I injure my knee or leg if I trip on something while doing a little climbing at the side of the hills to find for places to hide. :D But it sure was fun! We love the walkie talkies!
